Cardiff – Best Paths partners have created a new state of the art Simulation Toolbox for the connection of offshore wind farms to the electricity grid. The new toolbox provides accurate simulations allowing wind farm operators to increase reliability and reduce risks related to grid integration.
Cardiff University, main partner involved in the toolbox development, focus on the reduction of risks related to using High Voltage Direct Current links to connect offshore wind farms to the grid. The open access simulation toolbox is specially geared towards offshore wind farms using multi terminal direct current (MTDC) grids.
In this toolbox, users will find all necessary building blocks of the electrical components and their initialisation scripts, ready to be used to formulate applicable systems for offshore integration with MTDC networks. The resources provided in the toolbox were designed to be uploaded on the MATLAB programming platform, where stakeholders will be able to carry out complex simulation studies. The toolbox will be presented at the ACDC International Conference on the 15th of February in Manchester.
Additionally, Best Paths partners have created a ‘User manual’ detailing the construction process of three simulation models provided in the toolbox, to enable users to build new systems adapted to their needs.
The toolbox and the user manual are accessible on the Best Paths website (www.bestpaths-project.eu). For more information on the toolbox, you can contact Dr Carlos Ugalde-Loo from Cardiff University: Ugalde-LooC@cardiff.ac.uk.
