Sustainable Shipping Initiative launches work streams

Singapore, 26 April – The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), composed of sixteen corporate members from the shipping industry as well as environmental groups the WWF and Forum for the Future, have announced four new work streams to be enacted over the next eighteen months.

Companies involved in SSI include BP Shipping, Maersk Line, Lloyd’s Register, DSME and ABN-AMRO. Up to seven companies will take part in each of the work streams;

Energy Technology seeking to close the implementation gap and make low energy technologies more affordable and available.

Closed Loop Materials Management to develop systems and practices to enable the widespread adoption of closed-loop management of materials in ship building.

Credible Benchmarking will seek to help the shipping industry navigate beyond-compliance rating schemes, to drive improved sustainability performance.

Financing Sustainable Shipping hoping to pilot at least one new financial model that will reward sustainable performance.

It is hoped that these four work streams will help towards meeting the group’s ˜Vision for 2040‘. More information on the work streams can be found at the SSI’s website.
