New York, 26 July –The annual Global Innovation Index, which is produced by Cornell University, the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), has ranked six EU countries as amongst the most innovative in the world.

The top ten contains Sweden (2), the UK (3), the Netherlands (4), Finland (6), Denmark (9) and Ireland (10). The top spot is held by Switzerland, and the rest of the top ten is made up with the USA (4), Hong Kong (7) and Singapore (8). Four other EU states made it into the top twenty: Luxembourg (12), Germany (15), Norway (16), and France (20).

Upon completion, the Index was submitted to the EU’s Joint Research Centre, for statistical audit. The Index examined 142 countries, using 84 indicators, including the quality of top universities, availability of microfinance and venture capital deals, gauging both innovation capabilities and measureable outcomes.

Whilst such rankings can be subjective, with differences between lists, the Index suggests better performance in the EU than many would perhaps expect.

The Global Innovation Index has been published annually since 2007, and has become a key benchmarking tool for business executives, policy makers and others looking to understand the state of innovation around the world.
