New EU agency for the cooperation of energy regulators established

Ljubljana, 11 December 2010 – The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, has been designated to host the new agency for the cooperation of energy regulators (ACER) within the EU. Energy Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, has welcomed this decision which, he said, will allow for the effective implementation of the Third Legislative Package on the liberalization of the Energy Markets. The agency is set to be fully operational as of 3 March 2011. ACER will complement and coordinate the work of National Regulatory Authorities. Its competences will include the participation in the creation of European network rules, taking binding individual decisions on cross border energy infrastructure and giving advice on various energy related issues to the European institutions.
