MEPs push for 100% renewable heating & cooling

Strasbourg – The European Parliament has voted to amend the EU Strategy on Heating and Cooling (H&C), calling for the sector to be based solely on renewable energy sources by 2050. The H&C Strategy was introduced by the Commission in February, in order to bring the sector into line with the EU’s climate and energy goals.

The amendment for 100% renewables was introduced by the Industry (ITRE) Committee and approved in a plenary vote. The final text recognises, that the diversity of the sector across Member States means flexibility is needed, but says that all states should incentivise renewable technologies such as sustainable biomass, geothermal and solar energy, as well as supporting renewable-based district heating networks.
