Abu Dhabi, 28 January 2009 – IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency, a new global organisation set up to promote the development and use of renewable energy sources has been officially launched. The organisation aims to achieve what the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been doing for other forms of energy.
The main work areas for the organisation are foreseen to be advising its members on how to create the right frameworks, ensure capacity building, and improve technology transfer and financing for the wider use of renewable energies and renewable energy technologies. Led by the German government, the organisation’s founding treaty was expected to be signed on the 26-27 of January, where more than 100 government delegations took part of the conference in Bonn, Germany. About 50 countries, including France, Denmark and Spain were expected to sign the treaty.
