Brussels, 27 October 2008 – On October 27, 12 European leading research institutes have signed a declaration of intent to found the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA). The key objective of the initiative is to strengthen, expand and optimise EU energy research capabilities through the sharing of world-class national facilities in Europe and the joint realisation of pan-EU programmes.
EU Commissioners for Research and Energy, Janez Potocnik and Andris Piebalgs, welcomed this initiative, a pillar of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) launched in November 2007 by the Commission. Indeed, the cooperation of major national research institutes and universities under the “EERA” banner embraces the SET-Plan’ objective of addressing the triple challenge of energy security, climate change and competitiveness through collaboration at EU level.
