Brussels, 4 March – Eurostat have released data showing that the amount of municipal waste that was incinerated in the EU increased between 2010 and 2011 by over 1 million tonnes, giving incineration a 22.8% share of waste treatment options. Recycling and composting accounted for 40% of waste treatment, up from 27% in 2001.

Recycling and composting accounted for 40% of waste treatment, up from 27% in 2001.
Landfill use decreased by 1.3% in the period, whilst the EU recycling rate remained constant at 25% and composting reached 15% by weight. Eurostat also found that average municipal waste production fell by 1% to around 500 kilograms per person.
Denmark produced the most waste per person (around 700kg), whilst Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia averaged around 320kg. Italy was the only country to increase its waste production.
