EU and China sign R&I cooperation arrangement

The EU and China have signed an administrative arrangement for the period 2021-2024 to support collaborative research projects under two flagship initiatives.

The initiatives focus on two areas, (1) Food, Agriculture, and Biotechnology and (2) Climate Change and Biodiversity. These issues reflect the interests of both sides and will contribute to the advancement of key EU priorities such as addressing the Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on climate change and biodiversity loss. Specific topics will be jointly drafted and will focus on research.

Expansion of the selected areas of cooperation beyond 2024 will be dependent on the progress achieved on the roadmap discussions and on the overall state-of-play of EU-China bilateral relations.

The announcement builds on the European Commission’s strategy for international cooperation – the communication ‘Global Approach to Research Innovation’ was published last year.

Horizon Europe, the research and innovation funding programme 2021-2027, is one of the main tools to implement this strategy, and Greenovate! Europe is proud to be engaged in international projects such as EUCANWin!, an EU-Canada research cooperation action developing a climate positive and cost-efficient biomass-to-biopower supply chain for forest-based biomass.
