Brussels, 22 November – After a year of negotiation, the European Parliament and Council of the EU have signed the seventh Environment Action Programme (7EAP) into law, setting out environmental and climate policy direction until 2020.

The programme, subtitled ‘Living well, within the limits of our planet’, aims to help the EU meet its long-term aims of sustainable and green growth to boost economic development without harmful effects on the environment.

7EAP has nine policy objectives, including boosting resource-efficient, low-carbon economic growth; protecting nature and strengthening ecological resilience; and, addressing environment-related threats to growth.

The document draws on a number of initiatives, including the Resource Efficiency Roadmap, the 2020 Biodiversity Strategy and the Low Carbon Economy Roadmap.
