Brussels, 26 January 2011 – The Communication of the flagship initiative on resource efficiency was released today on January 26 2011. The full title of the communication from the Commission to the European Parliament, the Council, the Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions is; “A resource efficient Europe: Flagship initiative of the Europe 2020 strategy”.
The flagship Communication points out a strategic and integrated framework for a number of policy areas and initiatives to be adopted at EU level, including long-term agendas for climate, energy transport and innovation policies, the reform of agriculture and fisheries policies, biodiversity, raw materials and other resource-related policies.
Resource efficiency will play a key role in securing growth and jobs by increasing economic opportunities, improving productivity, reducing costs and enhancing competitiveness. In addition, it will help stimulate technological innovation, and open up new export opportunities.
As such, the communication calls for coherent action in a wide range of policy areas with significant political support and visibility.
The Communication at the end lists a number of roadmaps and medium-term strategies that the EU is planning to work on and release in the coming year.
