Commission presents four proposals for more sustainable travel

The European Commission has adopted proposals to modernise the EU’s transport system in line with the objectives of the EU Green Deal. The four measures aim to put the transport sector on track to cutting its emissions by 90%:

  1. Upgrading the TEN-T network of rail, inland waterways, short-sea shipping routes, and roads by 2040. More high speed train lines will be installed, and all 424 cities on the TEN-T network will be required to develop Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).
  2. An Action Plan on long-distance and cross-border rail that lays out a roadmap with further actions to help the EU meet its target of doubling high-speed rail traffic by 2030, and tripling it by 2050.
  3. Updating the 2010 ITS Directive to ensure that certain crucial road, travel and traffic data is made available in digital format, such as speed limits, traffic circulation plans or roadworks.
  4. A new Urban Mobility Framework setting out European guidance on how cities can cut emissions and improve mobility, including via SUMPs.
