Commission opens Consultation on the new Circular Economy Package

1 June, Brussels – The European Commission has opened a Consultation to inform its new Circular Economy Package, which is expected at the end of the year. The Commission has promised that the package will be more ambitious than the proposals of the previous Commission, which were abandoned in January.

The Circular Economy Package is expected to be comprised of a revised legislative proposal on waste and a Communication which sets out actions to be implemented in the remainder of the Commission’s term. The action plan will cover the whole value chain, and focus on concrete measures with clear EU added value, aiming at ‘closing the loop’ of the circular economy.

The consultation sets out a variety of options for supporting the emergence of a Circular Economy, including binding product design rules. The Consultation also focuses on improving production processes, to bring them in line with Circular Economy principles, and on the development of secondary raw materials markets.

The consultation is open until 20 August through the European Commission’s EUSurvey website.
