January 28, Brussels – The European Commission has released a Communication on Industrial Policy, for consideration by the European Council at its March Summit. The Communication calls for a ‘European Renaissance’, and strongly links industrial competitiveness with research and innovation in manufacturing.

The Communication stresses that continued research and innovation will be vital for European economic growth, particularly in the field of advanced manufacturing, and emphasises the role to be played by the Factories of the Future PPP. Alongside Horizon 2020, it points out that €100bn in European Structural Funds is available for innovation investment in the Member States, through their Smart Specialisation Strategies.

By delivering such messages, the Commission has made clear its commitment to manufacturing innovation, and sets the stage for future policy initiatives.
