Brussels – The European Institutions have reached agreement on the proposed Standardised Reporting Directive, which was proposed as part of the European Commission’s Better Regulation initiative. The Directive will harmonise and simplify data collection across 56 other Directives covering water, chemicals, waste and other environmental areas.
The new Directive will simplify environmental reporting, reducing the burden for national and local governments. It replaces an earlier directive which harmonised reporting into three-year cycles, but had become inefficient as new legislation had not been included in this existing framework. In total, only 23 directives were covered in the previous harmonised reporting framework.
The new reporting Directive is expected to be passed in tandem with new Circular Economy and Waste legislation. The European Parliament’s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) Committee will finalise its position on both in January 2018.
