Brussels, 30 November 2011– Commissioner Maire Geoghegan-Quinn presented a package of measures to boost research, innovation and competitiveness in Europe. Horizon 2020 is an €80 billion programme for investment in research and innovation to run from 2014 to 2020.
Horizon 2020 brings together all EU research and innovation funding under a single umbrella, and will focus on three goals:
- €24.6 billion to support the EU’s position as a world leader in science;
- €17.9 billion for industrial innovation, including greater access to capital and support for SMEs;
- €31.7 billion to address six key topics: health, food security, clean and efficient energy, smart transport, climate action and resource efficiency, and inclusive and innovative societies.
Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn said, “Horizon 2020 provides direct stimulus to the economy and secures our science and technology base and industrial competitiveness for the future, promising a smarter, more sustainable and more inclusive society.”
