HUBS4BUILD – Circularity Hubs for a Bio-based and Resilient Built Environment
Challenges: The built environment is responsible for approximately 40% of the EU’s energy consumption and 36% of its GHG emissions, and the current linear construction sector is characterised by siloed operations with little communication between stakeholders, from material suppliers to end-of-life managers. Circular alternatives struggle to compete in this market for several reasons, such as inconsistent EU-wide standards, insufficient financial incentives, and the relatively low cost of virgin materials.
Solutions: The HUBS4BUILD project will deliver a data-driven, bankable, and replicable blueprint for regional transformation, empowering communities to turn local underutilised resources into high-value, low-carbon assets for a climate-neutral and resilient built environment. To achieve this, HUBS4BUILD will co-design 13 Hubs in 13 countries, involving 500 local quadruple helix stakeholders to ensure solutions are context-specific and socially accepted. The project will innovate and validate a portfolio of 9 bio-based construction products (e.g. insulation from textile waste, panels from construction and demolition waste), deploying these solutions in 13 diverse operational environments via Public-Private-People-Partnerships.
