Opinion: AL-INVEST Verde – a great opportunity to finance green transition in Latin American SMEs

By Frank Summa, sequa

“The AL-INVEST Verde programme promotes sustainable growth and jobs creation by supporting the transition towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient and a more circular economy as well as sustainable agri-food value chains in Latin America. Since 1994, the EU has been funding projects that encourage the productivity and internationalisation of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in Latin America through their flagship programme for SME support known as AL Invest, the “EU-Latin America Alliance for Sustainable Growth and Jobs”. At sequa we were already involved in former editions of AL Invest, but this sixth edition provides us the chance to value our broad experience in the field of green and circular economy that we gained worldwide.

“The green economic transformation supported by AL-INVEST Verde is particularly important in the context of recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic. We know the great impact that Latin American countries have unfortunately had, especially the productive sector, and in that sense it is essential to use the tools for recovery as an opportunity for change for the better.

“sequa is implementing component 1 of AL-INVEST Verde by leading an international consortium composed of Latin American and European partners with whom we can look back on many years of joint and trustful cooperation. While implementing direct activities such as networking events, technical assistance or studies our main task will be the organisation of calls for proposals that enable consortia to apply for funding for their innovative project proposals.

How to apply

“Each proposal should be submitted under the form of a partnership which has to include at least one legal entity from the European Union and one legal entity from a Latin American country where the action is to be implemented. As such, this approach will provide the means to transfer the EU’s sustainable technical expertise, share lessons learned and best available techniques, and will ensure the EU added value into the programme’s activities. After contracting we will support the partnership projects with technical and financial coaching to ensure smooth implementation.

“Projects can be funded with up to €300,000, while a minimum 20% of the total volume must be borne by the applicant consortium. The first call for proposals is currently open and applications can be submitted until 27 June 2022. So, take your chance and apply now! We are looking forward to receiving your interesting and innovative project proposal.”
