Horizon 2020 commits to 35% funding for climate

6 November, Brussels – The European Commission has recommitted to its target of spending 35% of research funds on climate action for the period 2018-2020 after managing only 24% in the period to 2017. This means around €10 billion will be targeted towards climate, energy and circular economy projects in the next three years.

As Horizon 2020 enters its last three years, there is greater focus on targeting spending towards the Commission’s political priorities, putting larger budget towards fewer topics.

In total, it is expected that €3.3 billion will be targeted towards a low-carbon, climate-resilient future, €1 billion to the circular economy and €2.2 billion to renewable energy, energy efficient buildings, energy storage and electro-mobility.
